Match Report

Sawston v Haverhill 2nd September 2017

First game of the season and there was a new feel about the team ,by the players and the supporters alike.Training has been going well with good numbers attending and Steve Drawbridge the coach has bought the team together.

Haverhill had spanked us by 60 odd points last season ,so this was no easy game and a real test for the optimism fostered in the close season.

20 mins had gone by before the first score was on the board. The game was very even but it was Sawston who looked more like scoring. However it was a penalty kick that took Haverhill to a 3 point lead. The game continued with no quarter being given and the score line remained static. No more was a team cutting through our defence like butter we were more than holding our own. Sawston were pressing hard and after a grubber kick just inside the Haverhill half ,the Ball rambled on towards the  try line.Carl (Mincer) was pounding after it and a try was on.The ball was over the line and Carl was on top of it.Unfortunately Rugby balls being the shape they are took a slant to the left when Carl went the other way.Carl did state that no drugs were involved and it was purely the balls fault.

Several times Sawston were camped on the Haverhill line but failed to score. It was Haverhill who in fact scored the only try of the game ,when they broke away and it was the only time in the game when we missed tackles.

The game ended 10-3 to Haverhill .Thanks must go to the old and the new players who performed well.Given the score last year I think it’s Sawston who came out of the game with more optimism for the season. The new players did very well and strengthen the team overall

Thanks to Haverhill for being sporting on the pitch and afterwards.
