With only Shelford 1sts and 2nds playing on this day apart from the 4ths we were always going to play a very tough game with Shelford having a large pot of available players to choose from.
We were also playing on their new Astro pitch with gleaming white barriers encircling the playing surface and shiny new Floodlights to boot, or should I say the RFU’s pitch and caboodle.
Shelford scored quite quickly and converted by their Anglia Ruskin! College fly half. Not that we are at all bitter that they knicked our relationship with the Anglia Ruskin College ,just bloody annoyed LOL.
Sawston fought back and themselves scored a good try by Howard and was not converted.
Score 14 – 7 Shelford
Unfortunately we lost our Full Back Mark who has been in strong form of late, but with a head knock you cant take risks so off he came.
With some of the quality Shelford had available, their offload game was putting Sawston on the back foot,we could not get our hands on the ball. When we did we showed positive signs of getting back into the game. Sawston fought valiantly and at no stage where Shelford having free reign.
Half Time 31 – 7
The second half continued in the same vain, Sawston palying a determined rearguard action which was fostering some strong perfomances. Taz (No 7) and Toby (No6) very much on the back foot were playing well. Howard also was strong and a threat when he got the ball.
Sawston scored towards the end of the game making it 65 – 12 to Shelford
Man of the Match was a close run thing because their were a number of good performances ,however Toby BC got the nod for Man of the Match and took the obligatory first swig of the Port bottle.
The game was played in good spirit and after the game saw Sawston parading round in their Dressing Gowns. Everyone stayed on and had a few drinks and the atmosphere , generated by Saswtons team spirit was infectious. Even one of the Shelford lads was heard to say “Why don’t we do something like that? ”My only answer to that my boy is “Come and join us”
